Thursday started out well, ended badly

Yesterday I woke up, took my antibiotics, talked to Bridgett briefly on MSN, ate my cereal, then walked to campus to watch the Japan-Denmark game. YES, Japan kicked butt so much. They're going to the next round! I then took the bus to the public library because it was so damn hot, and texted Mandy to ask if she would like to go to the gym later.
Unfortunately I missed the bus at 5:14pm so I had to walk back to campus with my laptop, powercord and assorted other things in my backpack. In the sweltering 28Celsius still heat. Blargh. I was already pretty tired when I met Mandy, but it is true that it's harder to beg off working out when you've got a buddy with you. She went to the pool/sauna whereas I tromped to the gym.
I started with the elliptical, for running. I chose a flat-track field terrain. The elliptical machine asked me to input my weight so it could measure the number of calories burned. >_< The last time I was officially weighed in a doctor's office was August for my pap. (The dermatologist doesn't check my weight or blood pressure. He just looks at my face.) The last time I measured myself was early May when I got my scale back from Mandy and we were packing up our dorm rooms. I had lost some weight during spring semester, but that's expected with Commons food, the winter weather, exercise (walking around, up/down stairs, seeing Matt) and stress from papers, presentations and finals. I guessed my weight to be what it was at the doctor's, since the type of food I eat/make myself and lack of daily exercise and stress (relatively) would make me gain weight. Not to mention the few times I stayed at Matt's parents' place in Chicago = awesome, delicious, home-cooked dinners and usually 3 meals/day.
I was dripping sweat into my eyes and off my nose. The air-conditioning in the gym wasn't that strong (luckily or I'd been shivering like a bitch) and I was already hot from outside. I hit a personal best with the one-mile run! It was on a flat track field terrain, though. 8 minutes and 32 seconds! I'm so proud! Last time I worked out in the gym I got 11mins48secs. :P Back in middle and high school for the one mile run we had to do, I ran the mile in at least at least 12 minutes.
Then I did a series of exercises with the dumb-bells (5lbs since they still don't have two 3lbs weights).
1x10 (each arm) - Bicep Curl
1x10 (each arm) - Dumbbell Rows
1x10 - Dumbbell Tricep Extensions
Followed by these machines:
Chest press - 1x10 - 5lbs (HURT!)
Torso rotation - 1x10 (each side) - 10lbs
Shoulder press - 1x10 - 5lbs (OHMYGOD, these hurt)
Abdominal crunch thingy - 1x10 - 5lbs
Back extension - 1x10 - 5lbs
I then decided to finish off with another mile on the elliptical, but this time with their aerobic workout! It was insane hard. I thought it'd be less harder. Especially at freaking Level 1. Some of their instructions were "pull with your arms only" or "push with your arms" so your legs could be nothing, or "Run at least 6 MPH" or "Maintain between 3.0-4.0 MPH" (this was surprisingly difficult, and they added in resistance) or "reverse direction"!! (legs aren't meant to go back!!!) and the toughest was the uphill run. I was feeling vaguely nauseous at the end, so I was glad I only put a mile in. This time it was 11mins53seconds. Ye gawds. I was sweating even more during this run, so I was glad for all the paper towels in the gym.
There are two scales in the gym. One is a you-step-on-it-needle-moves-around type of scale, the other is a doctor's scale. The first one is definitely wrong. There is no way I weigh less than 90lbs. My pants aren't falling off me and I have a tush, thankyouverymuch. The doctor's scale might be right, or if it's wrong, it's not too far off. The gap between the two scales was a lot, more than the normal daily water/weight fluctuation. It makes me glad we don't have a wrestling team or they're in a lot of trouble! Hahahaaa! I really would've thought during their renovation earlier this summer they would've tossed out the bad scale.
By the time I got home, I was really hungry. I figured "Why not try making steak for the first time? I love steak. Steak is yummy. Steak is meat. Steak is full of protein and by God, I need yummy, protein-filled meat right now." I looked up instructions on using the broiler/making steak, and I called Matt for good measure.
Uhm, wow. I ended up setting the smoke detector off. I have no metel tongs. I have no pan/broiler dish. My steak ended up half cooked on one half, half raw on the other. It looked cook though, goddamnit. Matt's theory was that it oxidized so it turned darker so there was less "pink" for me to judge the cooked-ness from. I felt sick while eating it, and sick after. I had to throw up after Matt and I's nightly call. Going to sleep was pretty hard to do because my body was sore, especially my legs, my stomach was queasy and my mind just wouldn't shut up.
It is disturbing feeling queasy yet still hungry. :S I managed to go to sleep around 4am, and woke up today around 11am. I'm feeling a bit better, though being in air-conditioned buildings and then walking out in the heat is disturbing me up. Grrr. I forgot my hoodie, too.

Date: 2010-06-26 05:30 pm (UTC)Grilling a steak.
Date: 2010-06-27 05:44 pm (UTC)Here is how you start:
First, some assumptions:
- Most supermarket steaks are cut about 3/4 of an inch thick. it's pretty standard.
- One usually wants a steak thats about medium.
- You're using an oven grill, these normally go up to 230 degrees Celsius (Higher if it's a pro appliance, which is rare)
So all you need to do is to set your oven to grill, turn the heat up to maximum and let it heat up. Once heated, put in the steak on the rack closest to the grill element and close the door, but not shut, leave a crack open. Remember, you are grilling (i.e cooking by direct exposure to radiated heat) not baking. have any timing device handy. the moment 5 minutes are up, flip the steak once and wait 5 more minutes. The moment that is up, remove your steak. A steak done right should not need to be flipped or cooked more than once.
Let your steak stand a few minutes, then cut it down the middle. Now you have a reference for how your grill does steak. If you want it more cooked, add more cooking time in 30 second blocks on each side. Subtract time to make it more rare.
Sounds like chemistry? Thats because thats what cooking is. :)
